Dealing With A New Diagnosis

Dealing with an autism diagnosis for your child can be life-altering for the entire family. It can be overwhelming to think about what you need to do, deal with the emotional setback, and figure out how best to support your autistic child.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 44 children has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). And it is almost four times more common in boys than in girls.

Today, parents have access to a wide range of resources and support services to help their children. However, the fact remains that adjusting to an autism diagnosis can be a significant endeavor.

Confirm the Diagnosis

As a first step, make sure you trust the diagnosis. The diagnosis is likely correct if a team of professionals has assessed your child. However, if you have any doubts or are unsure about the accuracy of the diagnosis, please get a second opinion.

ASD symptoms, such as speech delays, anxiety, and sensory dysfunction, can also be caused by other disorders. Therefore, confirming the accuracy of the diagnosis is less about rejecting it and more about getting clarity.

Take the Time to Accept the Diagnosis

Take the time to accept the diagnosis and communicate with your child and family. Life with autism will be different from expected norms, but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean that everything will be a challenge forever.

Children with autism are as varied as the colors in the world. No two kids are the same, and each family has their own path to follow.

Talk within the family about the best path to follow to support your child’s needs. There are many types of treatment and support options that may be available depending on your child’s symptoms.

Inform Yourself and Learn about Therapies

Carry out your research and find the best options for your family’s needs. Depending on your child’s level of autism, you may consider behavioral and/or developmental therapy.

Learn about how ABA therapy works and consider combining it with other types of therapies that can help your child cope. Options can include speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc.

Reach Out for Help

You don’t have to do everything yourself. Talk to your child’s school and teachers to find out what support they can offer. You can also contact parent groups for information on therapists, schools, and other support services.

It is also a good idea to find someone who can help babysit your child or offer respite care for you. It could be a person from your extended family, friend circle, or someone completely new. Essentially, anyone who can connect with and manage your child’s needs while you take some time for yourself.

Enjoy Your Child

Autism or not, your child is still young and needs the attention a parent provides. It is easy to become overwhelmed with the plans and learning. But remember to take time out and have a good time with your child.

Find the best ways to play and have fun together despite the challenges. Build memories.
