How to Prepare for Your Child’s First ABA Session

The first day of ABA therapy can feel like a big milestone. Parents often feel a mix of hope, nerves, curiosity, and “I just want this to go smoothly.” That feeling is completely normal. Your child’s therapy team knows how important this moment is, and their goal is to help both you and your child feel supported from the very start.

This guide gives you a calm, clear picture of what to expect on day one and how to prepare, especially if your child is beginning ABA with Sunshine Advantage.

What the First ABA Session Is Really About

Modern ABA is grounded in compassionate, neurodiversity-affirming care. It’s not focused on rigid drills, forced compliance, or outdated expectations. Instead, it uses a connection-first approach. The first session with your child is less about “therapy work” and more about:

  • Helping your child feel safe
  • Easing into a new space
  • Getting to know your child’s personality
  • Understanding your routines
  • Discovering what motivates and comforts your child

At Sunshine Advantage, the first session uses a connection-first, play-based approach in environments designed for young learners, including:

  • Themed classrooms
  • Sensory areas
  • Social play spaces

Our spaces are designed to look and feel like a joyful preschool setting.

The goal is simple: start gently, build trust slowly, and meet your child exactly where they are.

This session is not about testing or judgment. It’s about building a foundation gently, respectfully, and at a pace your child can handle.

What to Bring: The First-Day ABA Checklist

Packing a few familiar items can make your child’s first visit easier and help therapists learn what comforts, motivates, and supports them. Whether your child is joining our Preschool ABA Clinic or our After-School Clinic, here’s a handy list of things to keep in mind for your child’s very first ABA session.

Documents

  • Insurance card
  • Diagnostic report (if applicable)
  • IEP (Individualized Education Program) or school notes (optional but helpful)

Comfort + Familiarity

  • A favorite toy or small item
  • A small comfort object or sensory item (fidget, soft blanket)
  • Noise-canceling headphones (if helpful)

Snacks + Hydration

  • Preferred snacks (great for motivation and comfort)
  • Water bottle
  • Any allergy information

Daily Needs

  • Diapers + wipes
  • A full change of clothes

Communication Tools

  • AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device or tablet (charged)
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) book or visuals your child already uses

A prepared bag helps therapists build rapport with your child and supports a smooth, positive first experience.

What Happens During the First ABA Session

Think of the first session as a gentle introduction. It is a chance for your child to explore, play, and adjust at their own pace.

1. Warm-Up & Rapport Building

Your child starts with preferred toys, sensory exploration, or simple play. The therapist may join them on the floor, at a themed station, or in a cozy corner - always following your child’s lead.

At Sunshine Advantage, our therapists use pairing, a process that shows your child:

“You’re safe here. I’m fun, predictable, and here to help.”

2. A Conversation With You

The therapist may chat briefly with you to better understand:

  • Your routines
  • Communication needs
  • Strengths
  • Challenges
  • Goals for therapy

This helps the team tailor the learning environment - whether that means sensory support, peer play opportunities, or structured routines.

3. Observations, Not “Testing”

Your child is not expected to “perform.” There is no testing, no drills, and no pressure.

The therapist quietly observes things like:

  • How your child communicates
  • How they explore the room
  • What captures their interest
  • How they respond to new people
  • Sensory preferences
  • Regulation and flexibility

If your child is nervous, clingy, excited, or overwhelmed, rest assured that it’s all completely expected.

What Assessments Actually Are

During the first session, you may hear specific terms brought up during discussion with the BCBA or therapist.

  • VB-MAPP - Looks at foundational language, social, and early learner skills.
  • ABLLS-R - A broader inventory of daily living, self-help, and learning habits.
  • Vineland-3 - A parent-completed questionnaire about adaptive behavior at home and in the community.
  • Preference Assessment - A fun process where the therapist identifies what motivates your child: toys, activities, snacks, or sensory experiences.
  • Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) - If challenging behaviors are a concern, your BCBA may begin gathering information about why the behaviors occur.

These tools help the BCBA understand your child’s strengths and needs. Additionally, these are completed gradually over multiple sessions. On the first day, the only activities are gentle play, connection, observation, and learning what motivates and supports your child.

After Day One: What the Next Few Weeks Look Like

It’s important to know that the first session is the start of the process, not the start of daily therapy. Here’s the typical path your child is likely to take.

Day 1: Intake & Observation (1-2 hours)

The BCBA gathers information, observes your child, and learns what supports them best.

Week 1-2: Treatment Plan Creation

Your BCBA creates a fully individualized plan based on:

  • Observations
  • Assessment results
  • Your goals
  • Your child’s strengths and needs

Week 2-4: Insurance Authorization

Insurance reviews the plan and approves therapy hours. The Sunshine Advantage team handles this entire process for you.

Week 3-5: Therapy Begins

Your child begins working with a trained Behavior Technician (BT) using play-based, naturalistic strategies in our clinic or your selected setting.

What Comes Next in Your Child’s ABA Journey

Once therapy begins, you’ll see growing:

  • Engagement
  • Communication
  • Flexibility
  • Predictability in daily routines
  • Confidence during transitions
  • Joy in shared play

ABA is not rigid; it adapts with your child. It integrates with school, speech therapy, OT, and the rhythms of real family life.

Modern ABA is not about changing who your child is. It is about supporting them in experiencing the world with more comfort, clarity, and confidence.

Why Sunshine Advantage Makes the First Day Easier

At Sunshine Advantage’s New Jersey center-based program, your child's first session is designed to feel:

  • Warm
  • Playful
  • Predictable
  • Respectful
  • Centered on your child's pace

Our classrooms mimic preschool environments with themed learning areas, peer play spaces, and sensory zones to help children feel safe and engaged from the very start.

Every activity, even on day one, is embedded with opportunities for communication, emotional regulation, and foundational skills that prepare children for real-life success. We believe the first session sets the tone for every milestone to come.

Your child deserves a team that celebrates them — and we’re honored to be that team.
